The outline below provides a template set of activities to facilitate the Values Alignment Workshop. Use this as a base to customise and build a relevant workshop for your specific audience and needs.
 
The objective of this workshop is to explore and align personal and organisational values to ensure integrity and cohesion.
 
Half-Day Workshop (4 hours)
 
Materials Needed:
    • Handouts on personal and organisational values.
    • Scenario descriptions for role-playing.
    • Feedback forms.
Facilitator's Note:
    • Create an environment of trust and openness to encourage honest discussions.
    • Be prepared to guide conversations and provide examples.
    • Focus on the practical application of values in the workplace to ensure real-world relevance.

1. Values Mapping

Participants identify and share their personal values.
 
Desired Outcome:
To create awareness of individual values and how they impact work and interactions. This activity fosters an understanding of personal values and their role in work dynamics and interpersonal interactions.
 
Steps:
    1. Ask participants to list their top five personal values.
    2. In small groups, share these values and discuss their significance.
    3. Facilitate a group discussion on the diversity of values and their impact on work.
Potential Challenges:
Some participants may feel uncomfortable sharing personal information. To help overcome this, work to create and maintain a safe and non-judgmental environment.
 

2. Organisational Values Exploration

Examination and discussion of the organisation's stated values.
 
Desired Outcome:
To gain a deep understanding of the organisation's core values. This activity aids participants in internalising organisational values and understanding their relevance.
 
Steps:
    1. Present the organisation's values to the group.
    2. Break into small groups to discuss these values and their perceptions.
    3. Reconvene to share insights and understandings of these values.
Potential Challenges:
Potential mismatch between stated and perceived values. To help overcome this, encourage honest discussions to understand and address any discrepancies.
 

3. Values Alignment Discussion

Aligning personal values with organisational values.
 
Desired Outcome:
To find common ground between personal and organisational values for better alignment. This activity aids in aligning personal and organisational values, which is crucial for integrity and cohesion in the workplace.
 
Steps:
    1. Participants reflect on how their personal values align with those of the organisation.
    2. In groups, discuss ways to bridge gaps between personal and organisational values.
    3. Group presentations on strategies for alignment.
Potential Challenges:
Difficulty in aligning values. To help overcome this, guide discussions towards finding shared values and mutual respect for differences.
 

4. Living the Values

Developing action plans to embody and promote organisational values in everyday work.
 
Desired Outcome:
To create practical ways to integrate values into daily professional life. This activity seeks to transform abstract values into tangible actions and behaviours in the workplace.
 
Steps:
    1. Groups brainstorm actions that reflect organisational values in daily work.
    2. Each participant creates a personal action plan.
    3. Share plans and commit to implementing them.
Potential Challenges:
Overly ambitious plans. To help overcome this, encourage realistic and manageable action steps.
 

5. Values-based Decision Making

Role-playing scenarios to practice values-based decision-making.
 
Desired Outcome:
To apply organisational values in complex decision-making situations. This activity builds skills in making decisions that reflect both personal and organisational values.
 
Steps:
    1. Present hypothetical scenarios that require decision-making.
    2. Participants role-play these scenarios, focusing on how organisational values influence their decisions.
    3. Group discussion on the outcomes and the role of values in these decisions.
Potential Challenges:
Balancing personal and organisational values. To help overcome this, encourage exploration of ethical dilemmas and practical resolutions.
 

6. Workshop Debrief & Feedback Session

Gathering participant feedback and summarising key workshop learnings.
 
Desired Outcome:
To reinforce key concepts and gather insights for continuous improvement. This activity helps to ensure an understanding of the workshop content and provides insights for enhancing future workshops.
 
Steps:
    1. Open discussion for participants to share their thoughts on the workshop.
    2. Summarise key concepts and learnings.
    3. Collect written feedback for future improvements.
Potential Challenges:
Limited participant engagement. To help overcome this, encourage honest and open feedback, stressing its importance for continuous improvement.
