10 Drivers of Employee Engagement


Since 2013, Officevibe has been collecting answers from approximately 50,000 respondents in over 1,000 companies and 150 countries, culminating in one of the biggest datasets on employee engagement in the world. 

What’s great about this effort is that the data is updated in real-time. The figures below represent a sample of the current state of employee engagement (as at September 2017).

What Employees Want

To engage employees, Officevibe identifies 10 key areas of focus.


The majority of employees (63%) don’t feel like they get enough praise. The good news for managers is that 83% of employees would prefer praise to a gift.


32% of employees have to wait more than 3 months to get feedback from their manager. Apparently, people just want to know how they’re doing—83% appreciate getting feedback, regardless of whether it’s positive or negative.


23% of employees leave work feeling drained or very drained every day. Without crossing boundaries, managers should care about employees’ lives inside and outside of work: one domain impacts the other.


56% of employees believe they don’t have any career advancement opportunities. Managers should find ways to increase mastery (e.g., learning new skills), autonomy (e.g., leading a new project), and purpose (e.g., understanding how the work/mission impacts others).


“Satisfaction” as defined by the survey includes compensation/benefits and the overall work environment. Sadly, 50% of employees aren’t satisfied with their benefits package. Better onboarding is a key recommendation.


“There is a serious crisis”: 47% of employees are stressed at work. Large numbers of employees are overworked, sleep deprived, and don’t have a healthy work/life balance.


Officevibe continuously measure the Net Promoter Score, finding that people are more likely to recommend their company’s products than culture.


A bad relationship with one’s boss can do more to harm engagement than any other factor. While 37% of employees say they don’t feel close with their manager, most would like to become closer and develop a better relationship.


About a third of employees don’t believe they have enough social interaction at work and at least part of the reason may be a demanding workload. It seems 60% of employee eat alone at their desk while working.


Alignment brings into play mission, culture, and values. 33% of employees don’t believe their company’s core values align with their personal values. More and better communication is recommended. For example, a pharmaceutical company isn’t just selling pills; they’re saving lives.
