Google Shares Its HR Knowledge With the World
Google, the company ranked no. 1 on Fortune’s list of best places to work for the past 6 years, has decided to share its HR knowledge with the world.The recently launched website—re:Work—offers free articles, guidelines, research, case studies, tips, ideas, videos and other tools to help make work better for all.
The re:Work website is the brainchild of Google’s HR boss, Laszlo Bock, who entered the public spotlight after publishing Work Rules! (2015), a book that takes people inside the management philosophy and HR practices at the tech giant.
Bock describes “an outpouring of support and interest” in response to the book. Many people asked him for more on the “nitty gritty” HR details so they could implement the same changes in their workplace. Hence, re:Work was born.
In a blog post written last month, Bock emphasises that the website is not just about Google:
“The re:Work website is our response to the community of people who want to make work better around the world. And we don’t want to just talk about Google, because we don’t have all the answers. There are a lot of organisations out there using data to make work better, so re:Work offers a collection of practices, research, and ideas from a variety of organisations and leaders.”
re:Work, although currently in its infancy, is expected to evolve into something like Google's version of the Harvard Business Review blog—a combination of the leading academic research and the best management advice from respected business thinkers around the world.
While people often think of Google as a company with crazy profit margins that allow them to dish out lavish benefits, bean bags, free food and lava lamps, Bock says there’s a lot more to Google’s management approach than what the public sees.
Bock outlines his vision for the website in Google’s first-ever re:Work event.
