The objective of this workshop is to facilitate interactive activities that enhance understanding and improvement of emotional intelligence (EQ) in the workplace.
Full-Day Workshop (8 hours)
Materials Needed:
-
- EQ self-assessment questionnaires.
- Scenarios and role-plays for exercises.
- Handouts on emotional regulation techniques.
- Feedback forms.
Facilitator's Note:
-
- Foster a safe and supportive environment for emotional exploration.
- Be prepared to guide discussions and provide examples.
- Emphasise the practical application of EQ skills in the workplace.
1. EQ Self-Assessment
Participants complete a self-assessment to gauge their current level of emotional intelligence. We use the TTI Emotional Quotient from TTI Success Insights.
Desired Outcome:
To provide a baseline understanding of individual EQ levels. This activity focuses on enhancing self-awareness in EQ, allowing participants to pinpoint areas for personal development.
Steps:
-
- Distribute EQ self-assessment questionnaires.
- Participants complete the assessment individually.
- Facilitate a discussion about the experience and general findings without requiring the sharing of personal scores.
Potential Challenges:
Discomfort with self-evaluation. To help overcome this, ensure confidentiality and emphasise the personal growth aspect.
2. Emotion Identification Exercise
Participants practice identifying and articulating emotions in various scenarios.
Desired Outcome:
To enhance emotional awareness and vocabulary. This activity focuses on recognising and naming emotions, a crucial skill in emotional intelligence.
Steps:
-
- Present different scenarios (via video clips, stories, or role-plays).
- Participants identify and discuss the emotions displayed in each scenario.
- Encourage the use of specific emotional language.
Potential Challenges:
Limited emotional vocabulary. To help overcome this, provide a list of emotion words to assist.
3. Active Listening Workshop
Participants engage in exercises to develop active listening skills.
Desired Outcome:
To improve empathetic listening, a key component of EQ. This activity focuses on active listening, crucial for empathising and understanding others.
Steps:
-
- Brief training on active listening techniques.
- Pair participants for listening exercises.
- Share experiences and discuss the impact of active listening.
Potential Challenges:
Difficulty in staying focused on listening without interrupting or formulating responses. To help overcome this, emphasise the importance of being present in the conversation.
4. Empathy in Action Role Play
Role-playing exercises to practice empathy in workplace situations.
Desired Outcome:
To apply empathy in complex or challenging interactions. This activity focuses on developing empathy to understand and share others' feelings, improving workplace relationships.
Steps:
-
- Create workplace scenarios that require empathy (e.g., dealing with a stressed colleague).
- Participants role-play these scenarios in pairs or small groups.
- Group discussion on the role of empathy and its impact.
Potential Challenges:
Misunderstanding empathy as agreement. To help overcome this, clarify that empathy is about understanding, not necessarily agreeing.
5. Emotional Regulation Techniques
Learning and practicing techniques to manage and regulate emotions.
Desired Outcome:
To improve self-regulation, a critical aspect of EQ. This activity helps participants to remain calm and clear-headed in emotional situations.
Steps:
-
- Explore various emotional regulation techniques (e.g., deep breathing, mindfulness).
- Participants practice these techniques in guided exercises.
- Discuss experiences and the applicability of these techniques in the workplace.
Potential Challenges:
Resistance to new techniques. To help overcome this, encourage an open mind and willingness to try new approaches.
6. EQ Improvement Plan
Creating a personal plan for developing EQ based on the day's learnings.
Desired Outcome:
To foster continuous improvement in emotional intelligence. This activity ensures the application of workshop content for personal growth beyond the session.
Steps:
-
- Participants reflect on their EQ strengths and areas for development.
- They create a specific plan for improving their EQ, using techniques learned in the workshop.
- Share plans in small groups for feedback and commitment.
Potential Challenges:
Overly ambitious or vague plans. To help overcome this, guide participants to set realistic and specific goals.
7. Workshop Debrief & Feedback Session
Gathering participant feedback and summarising key workshop learnings.
Desired Outcome:
To reinforce key concepts and gather insights for continuous improvement. This activity helps to ensure an understanding of the workshop content and provides insights for enhancing future workshops.
Steps:
-
- Open discussion for participants to share their thoughts on the workshop.
- Summarise key concepts and learnings.
- Collect written feedback for future workshop enhancements.
Potential Challenges:
Limited participant engagement. To help overcome this, encourage honest and detailed feedback, stressing its importance.
